Experience
I am a tutor with extensive experience studying and teaching Spanish and biology. I completed bachelor's degrees in Spanish and biology from the University of Texas at Austin. I also minored in English. After graduation, I traveled abroad to Spain to teach English on a Fulbright Scholarship. While there, I taught music, sociology, history, science, and English at a bilingual school. I enjoy exploring new cultures, and my experience in Spain gave me an opportunity to do this. After returning to the United States, I enrolled at UT Southwestern Medical School in pursuit of a medical degree. I am comfortable teaching a wide range of subjects, including Spanish, reading, literature, grammar and mechanics, Spanish literature, British literature, and writing. But my favorite subjects to teach are science related topics, including life sciences, biology, cell biology, neurobiology, microbiology, physiology, and neuroscience. My philosophy as a tutor is to emphasize the process of critical thinking. It is important for students to be able to explain things in their own words rather than simply memorizing something they heard or read in a book. I also realize that students can get bored with writing and reading rather quickly and that sometimes it is necessary to engage in alternative methods of teaching. In my free time, I enjoy reading classic literature, hiking, running, playing with my dogs, and watching old movies.
